This comment sucks

I hate this comment...

"You look so put together."

Sure, some people might find that phrase a wonderfully glowing phrase, but I don't.

Why?

Sure, I had my first child, now 14, when I was 18. Sure, I have a story...graduated on my own from college in exactly four years with a four year old and no family support. Sure, I now wear suits and make presentations to executives. This is just me. I made important decisions to get to this point in my life.

But to say..."You look so put together" is an awful saying. That insinuates that there was a great possibility that I might NOT have succeeded. Sure, there are folks out there that make decisions that are detrimental to their success in life, but I made decisions to be successful. I don't "look" put together, I am "together"... and there was no other way for me. Blah...I wish people would not make those judgmentally-awful comments to me. Come on...

I'm sure this is just my pet peeve, but I can't stand sayings like this...

  1. I think you should take it as a good thing because some people may 'look' like they have it together, but in reality, they don't. You on the other hand actually DO have it all together and it shows. Just my opinion.

I think you rock for all the accomplishments you've made in your life!

  2. This is a comment I would expect someone to say only in response to someone who was explaining a chaotic life. Like:
Person A: "You would not believe the night I had! The baby was... Then my dishwasher broke... And the dog...(fill in chaotic craziness)"
    - "Wow - you look so put together, I would have never known."

Point is? Anyone who says that to you in response to learning you life's journey is an ass.

(My pet peeve phrase is "you have such a pretty face". I hear "man you're unattractive, but at least your face is OK")
